Eradicating Malnutrition in Afghanistan

NEI Has Provided Emergency Food Aid to Over 4,300 Internally Displaced Families

Since the Taliban government takeover in August 2021, many Afghan families who were internally displaced have remained in refugee camps in Kabul. The World Health Organization, in 2025, estimates that over 22 million Afghans are in need of humanitarian aid, and more than 14 million are facing acute food insecurity.

For the past three years, NEI has been providing firewood and food packages—including protein-rich soybeans, fortified soy flour, rice, and cooking oil—to the most vulnerable families living in refugee camp villages in Kabul. According to the Kabul Department of Rural Rehabilitation, NEI is the only humanitarian organization providing both firewood and high-protein emergency food aid. This winter, NEI has supported 800 families with firewood and lifesaving, high-protein emergency food supplies. Find out more.

Our Impact

Soy Farming

In 2003, NEI introduced soybeans as an ideal protein source to end malnutrition in Afghanistan. To date, we have trained more than 125,000 farmers in 34 provinces. 80% of the farmers trained have made soybean farming their livelihood.

Women

Empowerment and Entrepreneurship

We empower women through skill development and entrepreneurship. We educate, train, and mentor women in tailoring, small-scale, mushroom cultivation, and poultry farming so that they can become financially self-sufficient.
