Eradicating Malnutrition in Afghanistan

NEI has Provided Emergency Food Aid to more than 4,550 Internally Displaced Families and 800 Earthquake Affected Afghans

Since the Taliban government takeover in August 2021, many internally displaced Afghan families have remained in refugee camps in Kabul. In 2026, the United Nations estimates that nearly 22 million Afghans are in need of humanitarian aid, and more than 17.5 million are facing acute food insecurity.

For four years, Nutrition & Education International (NEI) has provided cooking fuel and food packages—including protein-rich soybeans, fortified soy flour, rice, cooking oil, and other essential supplies—to the most vulnerable families living in displacement camp communities. According to the Kabul Department of Rural Rehabilitation, NEI is the only humanitarian organization providing both essential cooking supplies and high-protein emergency food aid.

On August 31, 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan. In response, NEI provided high-protein soy foods, hygiene kits, propane, pressure cookers, cooking oil, and cooking utensils to 800 Afghans affected by the earthquake. Our Impact

Soy Farming

In 2003, NEI introduced soybeans as an ideal protein source to end malnutrition in Afghanistan. To date, we have trained more than 125,000 farmers in 34 provinces. 80% of the farmers trained have made soybean farming their livelihood.

Women

Empowerment and Entrepreneurship

We empower women through skill development and entrepreneurship. We educate, train, and mentor women in tailoring, small-scale, mushroom cultivation, and poultry farming so that they can become financially self-sufficient.
